How to Play Roulette Online: Detailed Tutorial

Want to learn more about roulette online? Let Tommy Green break down the game, plus give you tips to improve your strategy when playing online roulette in Canada:

Different Bet Types in Online Roulette

In roulette, bets are predictions of where the ball will land on the wheel once it stops spinning. Players place their chips on the roulette table in spots that correspond to the different options on the wheel.

There are two types of bets in roulette: inside bets and outside bets.

Outside Bets in Roulette

Outside bets are simpler but offer a lower payout because the chances of winning are great. Placing outside bets is an ideal system if you are playing with a more conservative strategy, or have a smaller bankroll.

Outside Bets in Roulette

Here are the outside bet types in online roulette:

  • Even – win if the ball lands on any even number
  • Odd – win if the ball lands on any odd number
  • Red – win if the ball lands on any red number
  • Black – win if the ball lands on any black number
  • 118 – win if the ball lands on any number between 1 and 18 (1 and 18 included)
  • 19-36 – win if the ball lands on any number between 19 and 36 (19 and 36 included)
  • 1st 12 – win if the ball lands on any number between 1 and 12
  • 2nd 12 – win if the ball lands on any number between 13 and 24
  • 3rd 12 – win if the ball lands on any number between 25 and 36
  • Column –There are 3 columns on the board you can wager on. Column bets pays 2:1.

Inside Bets in Roulette

Inside bets are a little more complex but offer a higher payout because the chances of winning are lower. This is an ideal betting system if you are playing an aggressive betting strategy or have a bigger bankroll.

Inside Bets in Roulette
  • Street – A bet on any 3 (horizontal) numbers on the board. For example, a bet on 1-3 or 4-6.
  • Six Line – Also known as a double street bet. This is a wager on two lines of three (horizontal) numbers. For example, a bet on 1-6 would be a six-line bet.
  • Corner – This is a bet made on the intersection of 4 adjacent numbers on the board. For example, you can bet on the corners of 16, 17, 19, 20, and you win if the ball lands on any of the numbers you wagered on.
  • Split – This is like a corner bet, except made on the intersection of two numbers instead of four. For example, a bet made between 17 and 20 would be a split bet.
  • Straight Up – Bet on any specific number from 0/00 to 36.

Online Roulette Odds and Payouts

Online roulette is a game of chance, and the best players have a strong understanding of the odds. In the table below, we compare the European and American roulette odds, alongside the standard casino payout for each win.

Types of Roulette Games Online

The three most common types of online roulette in Canada are European, American, and French. Many real money online casinos offer all three. Here are the most popular styles and their key similarities and differences:

European Roulette

European Roulette

European roulette is the most popular roulette game. The wheel contains the numbers 1-36 in red and black, as well as the single green zero (0) slot. When the ball lands in the zero slot, all outside bets are lost completely. This single zero slot gives the house an edge of 2.7%.

American Roulette

American Roulette

The major difference between European roulette and American roulette is the presence of an extra zero slot. While it still has the numbers 1-36 and the zero slot, American roulette also features a double zero (00) slot. Like on a European table, if the ball lands in either of the zero slots, all outside bets are lost. This bumps the house edge up to 5.26%. It is worth noting that this higher risk doesn’t mean that players will be paid more for a winning bet – in fact, American, European and French roulette payouts are usually the same.

FrenchRoulette

FrenchRoulette

Roulette was first devised in France during the 18th century, so it is fitting that many players around the world still choose to play the French version today. It is played on a wheel identical to the European game and only has one zero slot. The layout of the French betting table is slightly different, but the methods and types of wagers are the same. The key difference is in the rules – if the ball lands on the zero slot, you have a second chance.

Each game of French roulette operates with one of two rules.

The first of these is ‘la partage.’ If the ball lands on zero and you have made an outside bet, you’ll receive half of your wager back. This rule makes the odds better for the player, cutting the house edge down to 1.35%.

Alternatively, the game might operate with the ‘en prison’ rule. If the ball lands on zero, your losing wager is frozen on the board until the next spin. If it is a winner on that spin, the bet is returned. If not, it is lost. Again, this second chance cuts the house edge down to 1.35%.

With the lowest house edge of the traditional styles, many seasoned players prefer French roulette.

Live DealerRoulette

Live DealerRoulette

All of the above types of roulette can be played with a online casino live dealer. You’ll be able to see and communicate with the dealer, place your bets, and watch the wheel spin in real-time! Many players love live dealer games because of their immersive quality – bringing the thrill of an in-person casino into your home.

Online Roulette for Real Money or Free

One of the best things about online gambling in Canada is the option to play at an online casino in Canada for real money or to play for free! Many new online casinos in Canada offer players the opportunity to play online roulette for free first to get a feel for the game and see if they enjoy their selection of online roulette games.

We think this is a great way for new and existing players to try out a casino’s selection of online roulette tables and to see if the casino is a good fit for players. That being said, nothing can top the thrills of playing online roulette for real money! While playing for free can help you learn skills and try out a betting strategy, playing online roulette for real money gives players the opportunity to win big!

Here are some of the pros and cons of playing online roulette for real money:

Pros

  • You can win real cash!
  • You can use strategies to help you win money
  • Playing for real money is fun and exciting

Cons

  • If you don't know how to play, you risk losing money

Online Roulette Bonuses

Bonuses are the most exciting aspect of gambling online. You can often get a big boost for your bankroll and give you the chance to maximise your deposit and earnings.

The most important online casino bonus you can acquire is of course the welcome bonus! Casinos will give a generous welcome bonus to their new players. Make sure you take advantage of it to boost your bankroll. Apart from that you can get no-deposit bonuses, reload bonuses and loyalty bonuses. They are all great ways to add more to your bankroll. If you are playing live roulette, you can take advantage of live casino bonuses. You can use a live casino bonus to play live games with a live dealer and other players.

Mobile Roulette Online in Canada

Now that almost everybody has a smartphone, it’s easier to do everything you can do on a computer while on the go. This has made mobile gambling even more popular due to its convenience – you can gamble from anywhere and at any time as long as you have an internet connection. That means you can play at a roulette online casino whenever and wherever you want!

Thanks to technology, playing roulette from a mobile device is almost completely the same experience as playing from a computer, with the only major difference being the size of the screen you’re playing on.

Let’s take a look at some of the main differences between the two types of mobile roulette online options Canadian players can expect:

Casino AppBrowser-Based Casino
Convenient – play from anywhere at anytimeCan only play from a computer or laptop
Most smartphones are now equipped to load high-def graphics quicklyLess powerful computers may lag while loading graphics
Have to download an app to play, which takes up space in your phone’s storageNo need to download software to play, but some casinos do offer downloadable desktop apps
Smaller screen, depending on the device you’re usingBigger screen

Other than these details, the experiences are very similar. No need to worry about missing out on any key features of your favourite casino if switching to mobile – most casinos have got your back with great mobile apps and mobile-optimized sites.

Roulette Online Betting Strategies

Betting strategies are not proven to help you win as all roulette games are completely games of chance. There is no way to guarantee winning. However, if you believe in luck and winning/losing streaks or want to expand your knowledge and understanding of online roulette, these may be perfect for you.

It’s important to remember that all of these strategies are supposed to work best when used on bets with 50/50 odds, or close to that. You should also remember the house edge, which is not factored in to any of these strategies.

Martingale Strategy & Reverse Martingale

How it works is pretty simple – you double your bet every time you lose in anticipation that when you win, you’ll win a larger amount. You can switch up the number/colour you’re betting on each time, or stick with the same one throughout.

The Reverse Martingale Strategy is the opposite – you start with the lowest bet amount, instead of doubling your bet when you lose, you’ll double your bet when you win.

Martingale Strategy

It’s best to start betting at a low amount, ex. $1. If you lose your first bet, you’ll bet $2 on the next round. If you lose again, you’ll raise your bet to $4, and so on. When you win, you’ll start over from your base bet and repeat, doubling when you lose and restarting when you win.

The idea is that you’ll make your money back when you win. However, it’s easy to get lost in the game and wind up walking away with no profits. The best way to play is to walk away once you make your first profitable win and break even.

Reverse Martingale Strategy

If the minimum bet is $1, you’ll keep betting $1 until you win, and then you’ll double it to $2. If you win again, you’ll double it to $4. If you then lose, you’ll start over from $1 until you hit your next win.

Reverse Martingale Strategy is based on the theory that winning comes in streaks, so by betting more during your winning streaks, you’ll wind up winning more in the end. However, the major flaw is that if you lose while you’re at a high betting amount, all of your profits are lost.

Fibonacci Strategy

This one is a bit more complicated, and is based on the idea of Fibonacci numbers in mathematics and how they form a Fibonacci sequence. You can begin with any number, and you’ll get the amount of your next bet by combining the value of your last two losing bets.

For example: if you bet $1 to start, your next bet will also be $1 (since we assume the second number is 0). Assuming you lost the first two bets, your third bet will be $2. If you lose again, your fourth bet will be $3 ($2 + $1), your fifth bet will be $5 ($3 + $2), your sixth bet will be $8 ($5 + $3), and so on. Here’s an example of what your next 10 bets would look like if you continued to lose:

$13, $21, $34, $55, $89, $144, $233, $377, $610, $987

If you were to win once you were on your fifth bet ($5), you would move back two numbers in the sequence, and your sixth bet would be the amount of your third bet ($2). The idea is that you keep moving back two spaces and will eventually reach the first number from your sequence and will have made a profit. Unlike the Martingale Strategy, you’re in a position to recover from your losses a lot quicker. On the other hand, you also stand to potentially lose more money if you hit a losing streak.

Labouchere Strategy

This is also known as the “Cancellation Martingale”. To begin, you decide how much you want to walk away with, and split that number into multiple smaller amounts. There’s no specific way to split it up, so your sequence can look however you want it to look.

For example, if you want to win $10, your sequence might look like this:

2 – 1 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 2 – 1

To begin betting, you’ll take the number on each end of your sequence and add them together to find your bet amount. In this case, the amount would be $3. If you win, you’ll cross off those end numbers, and your sequence will now look like this: 1 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 2. You’ll continue adding up the two end numbers until you have none left.

If you lose, you’ll add the amount that you just bet onto the right side of your sequence, which would then look like this: 2 – 1 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 3. Then, your next bet will be adding up the leftmost number with the number you just added, which in this case would equal $5.

The idea is that once all numbers have been crossed off, you’ll have won the amount you set out to win. This way you’re keeping track of your losses and you know what your profit is once you cross out all numbers in your sequence.

Bankroll Management

No matter what roulette strategy you adhere to, managing your money is paramount. Understand your limits before you start out to know how much you are willing to wager, then stick to it.

When betting for real money, never chase losses or lose sight of your chosen strategy. Roulette is a game of the odds, and each spin of the wheel resets the chances of the ball landing on a given number.
