How to Play Craps Online

Although it’s still relatively new at Canadian online casinos, craps remains a classic amongst online casino games.

In its most basic form, craps players bet on what they think the outcome of a dice roll will be. Craps is a table game involving a set of dice. It’s generally the rowdiest game in the casino and has a betting system that partially resembles that of roulette online. As you’ll see below, craps can be far more complicated, but we recommend new players stick to the basic bet types until they are more familiar with the rules.

Here’s the simple version of how to play craps online:

The Come Out Roll

The Come Out Roll

Step #1

The first roll of the dice is referred to as the come out roll, and the player rolling the dice is known as the shooter.

Pass Bet

Step #2

Pass Bet

Before the roll, bettors make a bet: either Pass or Don’t Pass. Bettors that have wagered on Pass win if a 7 or 11 is rolled, and lose if a 2, 3 or 12 are rolled.

Don’t Pass Bet

Step #3

Don't Pass Bet

A Don’t Pass bet means the opposite – you win on 2, 3, or 12, and lose on 7 or 11.

Point Phase

Step #4

Point Phase

If any other number than the above is rolled, players enter the Point Phase and the shooter rolls repeatedly until they either hit the same number again or roll a 7.

Win!

Win!

Step #5

In the Point Phase, if the shooter rolls the same number before they roll a 7, Pass bets win. If they roll a 7 before they roll the same number again, Don’t Pass bets win.

Online craps isn’t as intimidating as it seems. Taking the time to learn the rules will give you the edge.

Bet Types in Craps

Craps is an exciting game with a low house edge and great opportunities to make some real money if you are making smart bets. Too many folks playing craps get caught up in the excitement and energy of the craps table.

If you want to keep the house edge low while you play craps either online or offline, you want to focus on the following key bets. Not only do they improve your chance of winning real money, but they also keep you in the game longer.

Pass Line & Don’t Pass Wagers

Pass Line & Don’t Pass Wagers

The pass line and don’t pass wagers are the most popular bets in both traditional land-based casinos and online. A shooter normally will have to place one of them before the come out roll.

The pass line bet is the most popular bet type in craps, online and offline. The player bets on the dice landing on a 7 or 11 before it lands on a 2, 3, or 12 on the come out roll. If the dice lands on a 7 or 11 the pass bet wins, but if it lands on a 2, 3, or 12 the pass bet loses. If it lands on a different number, the pass bet remains active until the dice lands on a 7.

The don’t pass bet is essentially the opposite. The player bets on a 2 or 3 being rolled before a 7 or 11. If the dice lands on a 12, the bet is pushed, so no other number can be rolled before a 7 in order to win.

These bets both payout at even money when they cash.

Come & Don’t Come Bets

Come & Don’t Come Bets

A come bet can only be made after players determine the point on the pass line. If the player makes a come bet, they’re betting on a 7 or 11 being rolled before the come point.

The don’t come bet is the opposite. The player bets on a 2 or 3 being rolled before a 7 or 11. Like the don’t pass bet, if the dice lands on a 12, no other number can be rolled before a 7 is thrown to win.

These bets both payout even money.

Odds Bets

Odds Bets

These are a bit like side bets that can be made after a point is established, placed on a specific outcome of a roll.

They are extensions of each of the pass line odds, don’t pass odds, come odds, and don’t come odds. The player would bet on the outcome of a specific number being rolled before a 7 to complement a main bet in the point phase.

Odds bets have zero house edge and pay out differently depending on the number you bet on.

  • 6 and 8 – Pay out 6:5
  • 5 and 9 – Pay out 3:2
  • 4 and 10 – Pay out 2:1

Proposition Bets

Proposition Bets

There are several different proposition bets, including the Aces Wager (or “Snake-Eyes”), The Ace-Deuce, Crape & Eleven, Boxcars, The Whirl, and several others. These are essentially betting on specific roll outcomes as a side bet.

The great thing about props is their payouts are huge, the downside is the house edge is a lot higher. If you’re willing to accept the risk, you could make a lot of real money with minimal investment. However, if you’re an inexperienced player, you should stick to non-prop bets to save your bankroll from possible losses.

Online Craps Proposition Bet Types

As we said above, the team at Gamble Online recommends avoiding proposition bets (also known as ‘prop bets’) in craps, at least until you’re familiar with the rules. If you do want to place proposition bets, here’s how they work:

Online Craps vs Casino Craps

There are a couple of benefits if you play craps when online gambling in Canada. First and foremost, there is the convenience of being able to play from anywhere. Simply pick up your mobile device and start shooting dice. If you want to mix things up and play a different game like online poker, live casino Canada, or blackjack online, you’re only a couple of taps on your screen away.

There’s also free money. Most online casinos will give bonus money to new players that can very easily turn into thousands of dollars of real money. When was the last time you walked into a real casino with $100.00 and they gave you another $200.00?

The main drawback to playing craps online is you don’t get the same atmosphere. The craps table is a rowdy place and for some people, that is part of the appeal. However, for others, especially inexperienced craps players, that can be intimidating.

Pros

  • Play from anywhere at any time
  • No line-ups or travel time
  • Easily switch from one game to another
  • FREE money from bonuses to play with
  • Can play games for free OR real money

Cons

  • Some have limited hours
  • May experience line-ups, travel required
  • No bonuses and no free money
  • Unique gaming atmosphere that you don't get playing online
