The Come Out Roll

Step #1

The first roll of the dice is referred to as the come out roll, and the player rolling the dice is known as the shooter.

Before the roll, bettors make a bet: either Pass or Don’t Pass. Bettors that have wagered on Pass win if a 7 or 11 is rolled, and lose if a 2, 3 or 12 are rolled.

Don’t Pass Bet

Step #3

A Don’t Pass bet means the opposite – you win on 2, 3, or 12, and lose on 7 or 11.

Point Phase

Step #4

If any other number than the above is rolled, players enter the Point Phase and the shooter rolls repeatedly until they either hit the same number again or roll a 7.

Step #5

In the Point Phase, if the shooter rolls the same number before they roll a 7, Pass bets win. If they roll a 7 before they roll the same number again, Don’t Pass bets win.

Pass Line & Don’t Pass Wagers

The pass line and don’t pass wagers are the most popular bets in both traditional land-based casinos and online. A shooter normally will have to place one of them before the come out roll.

The pass line bet is the most popular bet type in craps, online and offline. The player bets on the dice landing on a 7 or 11 before it lands on a 2, 3, or 12 on the come out roll. If the dice lands on a 7 or 11 the pass bet wins, but if it lands on a 2, 3, or 12 the pass bet loses. If it lands on a different number, the pass bet remains active until the dice lands on a 7. 

The don’t pass bet is essentially the opposite. The player bets on a 2 or 3 being rolled before a 7 or 11. If the dice lands on a 12, the bet is pushed, so no other number can be rolled before a 7 in order to win.

These bets both payout at even money when they cash.

Come & Don’t Come Bets

A come bet can only be made after players determine the point on the pass line. If the player makes a come bet, they’re betting on a 7 or 11 being rolled before the come point.

The don’t come bet is the opposite. The player bets on a 2 or 3 being rolled before a 7 or 11. Like the don’t pass bet, if the dice lands on a 12, no other number can be rolled before a 7 is thrown to win.

These bets both payout even money.

Odds Bets

These are a bit like side bets that can be made after a point is established, placed on a specific outcome of a roll.

They are extensions of each of the pass line odds, don’t pass odds, come odds, and don’t come odds. The player would bet on the outcome of a specific number being rolled before a 7 to complement a main bet in the point phase.

Odds bets have zero house edge and pay out differently depending on the number you bet on.

• 6 and 8 – Pay out 6:5
• 5 and 9 – Pay out 3:2
• 4 and 10 – Pay out 2:1

Proposition Bets

There are several different proposition bets, including the Aces Wager (or “Snake-Eyes”), The Ace-Deuce, Crape & Eleven, Boxcars, The Whirl, and several others. These are essentially betting on specific roll outcomes as a side bet.

The great thing about props is their payouts are huge, the downside is the house edge is a lot higher.
